Is your Epson XP-200 blocked by the waste ink counter?

The Epson XP-200 stores an internal maintenance value that estimates how much ink has been sent to the waste ink pads during cleaning cycles and normal servicing. When the programmed limit is reached, the printer can stop accepting print jobs even though it still turns on and the cartridges contain ink.

Service Required message

Epson Status Monitor or Windows reports that printer service is required.

Waste ink pad warning

The message says that an ink pad is at or near the end of its service life.

Warning lights continue

The printer powers on but repeated or alternating warning lights prevent normal printing.

Jobs remain in the queue

Documents do not print even after checking paper and cartridges.

Important: not every flashing light means a full waste ink counter. A paper jam, carriage obstruction, cartridge fault or damaged USB connection needs a different repair. Read the counter first instead of guessing.
What the reset changes

Software reset and physical ink pads are two separate jobs

Wic Reset Connect clears the protected waste ink counter stored in the printer. It does not physically remove ink from the waste pads. Replacing or cleaning the pads without resetting the stored counter will usually leave the Service Required lock active. Resetting the counter without checking heavily saturated pads can also be unsafe if the printer has had very intensive use or shows signs of leakage.

For many home printers, the counter reaches its limit before ink leaks outside the machine. Even so, look under and around the printer before continuing. If you see fresh ink, a soaked base, an unusual smell or ink escaping from the case, service the waste ink system before returning the printer to regular use.

The correct order: confirm the counter error, inspect the physical condition, prepare a stable USB connection, reset the counter, power-cycle the printer and verify the new reading.

Do not start the reset until all five points are ready

  • A computer with Windows 7, 8, 10 or 11.
  • The original Epson driver for the XP-200.
  • A working USB data cable connected directly to the computer.
  • Only one Epson or Canon printer connected.
  • A successful counter reading in WIC Reset Utility.
Preparation

Prepare Windows and the printer for stable communication

Most unsuccessful attempts are not caused by the reset key. They happen because Windows loses the printer during the write operation. A few minutes of preparation greatly reduces that risk.

1
Connect directly by USB

Do not reset over Wi-Fi. Do not use a USB hub, splitter, docking station or long extension cable. Connect the cable to a direct motherboard USB port.

2
Install the correct Epson driver

A generic Windows printer driver can be enough for ordinary printing but fail when the program sends service commands. Install the original driver made for the Epson XP-200.

3
Clear the print queue

Cancel pending documents and wait until the queue is empty. A stuck print job can keep the printer port busy.

4
Close Epson background processes

In WIC Reset Utility open Support, choose Disable processes and use Terminate all. Also close Epson Status Monitor before starting Connect.

5
Disconnect other printers

Leave only the XP-200 connected. This prevents the wrong USB device or port from being selected.

Complete procedure

Epson XP-200 reset instructions

Follow the steps in order. Do not disconnect the cable, close the program or switch off the printer while the counter is being written.

1

Read the counter

Download WIC Reset Utility, select the Epson XP-200 and read the waste ink counter through USB. Continue only when communication is stable.

2

Download Connect free

Download the current Wic Reset Connect program from the official source. There is no fee for downloading or installing the application.

3

Buy one activation key

Purchase the official Epson and Canon reset key. Delivery is automatic by email after payment. The unused key has no expiry date.

4

Select the XP-200

Open Wic Reset Connect and confirm that the program detects the printer. If the key field disappears, stop because the computer has lost communication with the printer.

5

Enter the key and reset

Paste the activation key and start the reset. One key performs one full reset on one supported Epson or Canon printer.

6

Restart and verify

After the success message, switch the printer off with its power button for about 10 seconds, switch it on again and read the counter in WIC Reset Utility.

Use the correct program

WIC Reset Utility checks the counter. Wic Reset Connect performs the reset.

The two applications have different roles. Using the purchased Connect key inside WIC Reset Utility will not complete the intended procedure.

WIC Reset Utility

Use it before and after the reset to read the waste ink percentage, confirm the model and test communication between Windows and the printer.

Troubleshooting

What to do when the Epson XP-200 is not detected

Do not keep entering keys while the connection is unstable. Fix communication first, then repeat the reset with the official recovery route.

The printer disappears or the key field vanishes

The computer has lost the printer connection. Close the program, reconnect the USB cable to another direct port, wait until Windows detects the printer and open Connect again. Try another data cable or another Windows computer when necessary.

WIC Reset Utility cannot read the counter

Check that the XP-200 is powered on, selected in the program and connected by USB. Remove hubs, reinstall the original Epson driver, clear the queue and terminate Epson background processes.

Windows installs the printer during the procedure

Stop and allow driver installation to finish. The printer port must remain unchanged during the reset. Restart Windows after installation if the device repeatedly reconnects.

The reset was interrupted after entering the key

Correct the cable, port, driver or process problem first. Then use the official replacement-key page and repeat the documented procedure. Do not attempt another write over an unstable connection.

The counter reads 0% but the printer still shows an error

The waste counter has been reset, so another active fault may be present. Check for paper, carriage, cartridge and general hardware errors. Also power the printer off for about 10 seconds before testing again.

The printer works but ink is visible underneath

Stop using the printer and service the physical waste ink system. A software reset cannot repair a leaking tube, saturated pad or damaged internal part.

Final verification

How to confirm that the reset worked

After Wic Reset Connect reports success, turn the Epson XP-200 off with the power button for about 10 seconds and turn it on again. Open WIC Reset Utility and read the counter. A successful reset should show the cleared value, and the printer should accept a normal print job when no other error is active.

Keep the USB cable connected until verification is complete. The printer can return to its normal connection only after the counter reading and test print are correct.

Frequently asked questions

Epson XP-200 reset FAQ

Can I reset the Epson XP-200 with its buttons?

No. The buttons can cancel jobs or restart the printer, but they do not clear the protected waste ink counter. The full reset requires Wic Reset Connect, Windows and a direct USB connection.

Can the reset be performed over Wi-Fi?

No. Use a USB data cable connected directly to the computer. Wi-Fi is not suitable for the service communication used during the counter write.

Does Wic Reset Connect work on macOS?

No. Use a computer with Windows 7, 8, 10 or 11. A Windows laptop can be used temporarily if the printer normally works with a Mac.

Do I need WIC Reset Utility and Wic Reset Connect?

Use WIC Reset Utility as the free helper for reading and checking the counter. Use Wic Reset Connect for the final reset with the activation key.

Will replacing the ink pads remove the Service Required message?

Not by itself. Physical service does not automatically clear the stored counter. The printer can remain blocked until the counter is reset through software.

Does the activation key expire?

An unused key has no expiry date. Prepare the printer and verify USB communication before using it.

Can one key reset several printers?

No. One activation key is intended for one full reset on one supported Epson or Canon printer.

What should I do if my printer is XP-201, XP-202 or another similar model?

Check the exact model on the printer label and confirm support in the printer finder. Select the exact model in the software instead of assuming that every XP-200 series variant uses the same procedure.
